Passage: Ezekiel 16:1-63

Ezekiel 16 contains a shocking and offensive allegory designed to paint a picture of the sinful rebellion of Israel against their covenant-making and covenant-keeping God. The allegory presents a redefined understanding of the history of Israel in the context of its covenant relationship or marriage with God. The goal of Ezekiel presenting this shocking allegory is to drive home the point he keeps emphasizing: the people of God have turned away, including those in exile, through sinful rebellion, abominations, covenant brokenness, and unfaithfulness. God wants them to recognize and understand their sin, to repent, and to turn back to Him.

This text challenges us to take seriously the warnings that God provides when it comes to sin. We must deal aggressively with our sin, fighting temptation, and living in total dependence and reliance on God. Further, this passage helps root our history and story, reminding us that we are sinners saved by unmerited grace, born again, now free, and given eternal life through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus has saved us from sin and death. We are part of the New Covenant people of God. We move forward, rooted in our identity in Christ. Jesus is our rescuer, our provider, and our living hope!
