Passage: Ezekiel 14:1-23

In Ezekiel 14, we see how God responds to the idolatry of his people, Israel, by committing to recapture their hearts from the things that have stolen them away. And his people have become so corrupt and complacent, that the only way God can do this is by sending them into death.

This text invites us to repent and turn away from our own idols - the things we look to for ultimate security and significance in life apart from God that end up enslaving us. And it shows us that, like for Israel, the path to freedom from these idols is actually through death. Only instead of sending us to our deaths, God invites us to follow Jesus into death - to be baptized into the waters of death, burying our self-interest, our pride, our attempts at grasping control apart from God. This is how God recaptures our hearts, by beckoning us to follow him into a death that leads to resurrection life.
