Passage: Ezekiel 2:1-10
In this text, we see the origin story of Ezekiel the Prophet, which shows us who Ezekiel is, to whom he is being sent, and most importantly, who God is. God calling his prophet means that he is about to speak. Even though the message that Ezekiel is to speak on behalf of God isn't going to be pleasant to the ears, it will communicate God's desire to wipe away sin, restore righteousness and justice, and demonstrate his steadfast love for his people (Jeremiah 9:24).
We live in a world of wars, injustices, greed, oppression, exploitation, violence, deceit, unfaithfulness, and selfishness. We WANT God to call a prophet… We don’t want sin to go unchecked…
Ezekiel, who was a prophet among the people of Israel, is called to be set apart from the people to do God’s work. Later, the Son of Man—Jesus Christ—will serve as the ultimate prophet of God who came to be among us and yet perfectly set apart from us—speaking God’s truth and heralding the good news of the Kingdom of God. Representing humanity before God’s throne, Jesus will pay for the penalty of our sins and call us out of sin and into life in his holy name.
