God gave Israel a ritual meal to help them remember God's faithfulness--to know that they could trust God and his promises because he is the one who delivered them out of slavery and into his righteous rule and reign. This Passover meal taught Israel to celebrate God's power and love even before they experienced the exodus-their way out of Egypt. God now calls on us to celebrate the Lord's Supper (communion) even before we experience our final victory because he is asking us to trust Jesus who gave his life on the cross to give us the ultimate exodus from sin and death. We can live as victors because God is faithful and we can trust his promises based on his track record of faithfulness. The Passover meal and the Lord's Supper teach us something very important about our identity: We are God's children who are adopted by his sovereign grace and invited to feast at his table as his heirs. When we sit at the Lord's table, we know that this is where we belong--this is home.
