Passage: Exodus 33:1-23

Israel was desperate to experience God's presence; so much so that without it, they would not be able to have any sense of true identity. In Exodus 33, Moses intercedes for Israel and seeks to reverse God's decision to not go with his people. When Moses fulfills his priestly role as he represents Israel before God, God promises that his presence will go with them. We see God's amazing creativity and wisdom in allowing his people to experience his presence and favour even after they had failed so miserably. God's desire is to give us his presence, and he ultimately achieves it through Jesus the better high priest. Moreover, he calls us to be a kingdom of priests, so we can learn from Moses and Jesus about how we can faithfully carry out our duties as a priestly kingdom. This is our identity. We are a chosen race; a prized possession of God; redeemed by his blood. We are a royal priesthood. Don’t forget who you are. You have the most dignified identity. You are image bearers; name carriers of our mighty YHWH. You are his messengers, vice-regents, and ambassadors of his good news. This is who we are.
