Passage: Exodus 1:1-2:25, Exodus 20:8-11

In this series premiere, we dive into discussing the challenge of identity in a culture that is experiencing identity crisis on so many levels. We explore who God is in order to learn who we are in him. In this very first sermon of the series, we learn that God is the Anti-Pharaoh. Pharaoh, in the book of Exodus, serves as a character foil to God so that the readers of this book can clearly see God's attributes as it stands in contrast to Pharaoh. Pharaoh harmed and enslaved the people under his reign. However, God protects and frees people under his reign. Furthermore, God gave the Sabbath as a gift for us to recalibrate our lives so that we may leave the reign of Pharaoh and submit to the wonderful reign of our God. If God is the Anti-Pharaoh, we are his beloved. We are valued; treasured; dignified. We have intrinsic value because we're made in the image of God. We have astronomical worth. In our search to establish an identity that is based on truth, this is where we begin.
