Passage: Luke 10:25-37
Understanding the cultural and historical context of the animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans during Jesus’ time helps us interpret and appreciate the Parable of the Good Samaritan appropriately. We cannot fulfill our gospel mandate without first going through the Samarias of our own context. This is a good opportunity for us to examine our own hearts and our own structures. Do we have any prejudices and animosities that are causing us to withhold God’s compassion, kindness, mercy, grace, and love? God invites us to tear down the boundaries that we put up to restrict God’s love from flowing out into the world. Jesus is the best example of what a good neighbour looks like. Let us love like Jesus. By the help of the Holy Spirit, let us learn to be good neighbours.
