This past spring break, from March 13th-22nd, SDBC went on a missions trip to Vicente Guerrero, Baja California Mexico. We took a team of 15 people, and together with the youth group at SouthRidge Fellowship Baptist Church there was 47 of us on this journey. We were so excited to partner with an organization called Oasis in Baja, Inc to help run after-school programs for children, put on a vacation bible school event, complete work projects, and share the love of Jesus with all those we encounter.
For this month's Missions Corner Highlight, we get to hear from one of our team members, Campbell Brown:
Seeing God at Work
By Campbell Brown
When I think back on our time in Mexico, it becomes clearer and clearer that women play an important role in God's work in Vicente Guerrero. Everywhere we went, you were sure to see a strong, Christ-like woman working hard with a smile on her face. We met preschool staff that went above and beyond to love their students. For them, this meant doing their students' hair, providing oral-hygiene products, and even feeding them two meals while at school. At Oasis, the after-school program that we visited, the female staff were full of God's love and were eager to spread it to the kids. Some even had their own children with them at work, which showed how God was working in them in more than one way. While working on renovations at the local church, mothers were once again working hard with a kid on their hip. One missionary shared that she had four biological kids and had adopted four more since moving to serve in Mexico. Her faith, hard work, and servant-heart left a lasting impact on my life. But she wasn't the only woman who sacrificed for the gospel. Women were working twelve-hour days picking the berries that we complain about being too expensive at Walmart. Not to say that men aren't also doing amazing things to further the kingdom, but as a young woman, I can't help but reflect on how much of Jesus I saw in the ladies of Vicente Guerrero.
