Passage: John 16:1-15

In John 16:1-15, Jesus wants to encourage and spur on his disciples in the face of what's to come. He elaborates further on the advantage they will receive with the coming of the Holy Spirit and sheds more light on the "Helpers" role in our lives and the world.

Being a Christ follower and kingdom citizen means being in a battle. We feel and experience this every day, whether through overt opposition or through the subtle ways in which the world tries to lure us off track and away from Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life.

However, we have the Holy Spirit, which means that despite what we face and the feeling sometimes that we might be fighting a defensive battle, in reality, we are on the offensive, witnessing to the world because of Jesus' ultimate victory on the cross and in light of his second coming.

John 16:1-15 draws out themes of justice, judgement, and truth. It also presents a strong reminder to live missionally with urgency because what we do echoes throughout eternity. We're also reminded that we don't do this through our own power -- we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, guiding, leading, and transforming us!
