Passage: Matthew Matt. 25:31-46
In this final parable recorded in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus issues a clear warning against living as rogue stewards of King Jesus' gospel. He has entrusted to us his image, and calls us to live as faithful stewards who rule in his likeness. Our God is the defender of the weak--a Righteous Judge and a Good King--and he calls us to live according to our identity in Christ. We are called to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit those who are sick, and visit those who are in prison. In these practical acts of kindness and mercy, we are being trained for our eternal life in God's kingdom.
On the other hand, those who do not live as stewards of our merciful King are told that they are not part of the kingdom. The severe warnings in all three parables in Matthew 25 show that failure to honour Jesus is altogether incompatible with the life of a Christian. Holy Spirit, help us to examine our hearts. Correct us as needed; encourage and inspire us to be faithful stewards.
