Passage: John 1:19-34

In John 1:19-34, we unpack John the Baptist’s declaration of his identity and purpose to the Jewish Leaders. John’s answer reveals that he cannot think or speak of himself without reference to Jesus, whom he then points to as the one who fulfills our deepest longings in life. The question is: In a culture where self-sufficiency reigns supreme, is that how we see ourselves in relation to Jesus? In a world where we have become so accustomed to chasing whatever we think will fill the void in our heart and numb the pain, when that doesn't work, God invites us through this text to keep looking to Jesus to satisfy our longings. Instead of filling the void ourselves or numbing it, may we learn to leave space for Jesus to fill us with his very self.
