Selfless, Joyful, and Willing

11Jun, 2026

One of the unique gifts of serving as Director of Facilities is the view it gives me. In order to support and serve the many ministries at South Delta Baptist Church, I am involved with all of them and that means I get to see the full, multifaceted life of our church up close.

Over the first six months here, first as Interim Facilities Coordinator and now as Director of Facilities, I've watched a strong, unifying spirit move through SDBC again and again; ordinary people who are selfless, joyful, and willing, quietly bringing our ministries to life.

Here are four of those moments and, fittingly for a Spotlight on 1988, two of them reach right back to the year so much of our building first took shape.

Warmth Restored
When one of our offices stopped getting any heat, we called in a service company to look at the HVAC unit on the roof. What truly made the difference, though, was a church member, now retired but with thirty years in the HVAC business, who gave a couple hours of his time to work alongside them. Together, they pulled out the original 1988 mechanical plans and traced the whole system as it was first built. With that understanding in hand, we found the part that was needed, made the repair, and the two staff members who work in that office were warm again.

A Fireplace Reborn
The Chapel has always had a large fireplace, and its mantle, original to 1988, gave the room a quiet charm, right up until the day it came away from the wall. Two members of our church family stepped in on their own time, with their own energy and skill; one rebuilt the fireplace piece by piece, while the other transformed the wall behind it into a true feature wall. The fireplace is now a centrepiece with real presence, and the Chapel is more beautiful for it.

Moments for Ladies Spring Tea
Each year, our Moments for Ladies ministry hosts a Spring Tea, and the response is wonderful. The team pours remarkable effort into decorating the room and making the afternoon special for every woman who attends. Just as important, though less visible, was the kitchen crew who spent hours preparing the desserts and delicacies working hard and with such glad hearts that they turned an annual gathering into one of the highlights of the year. It is a beautiful picture of women giving of themselves for the good of the church, the church family, and the wider community.

A Cake for Marilyn
It might seem like a small thing, but it mattered: when we honoured Marilyn for the work she had done with Seniors for Seniors, we marked the moment within the group with a cake; and what a cake it was! A wonderful carrot cake, made and given by someone willing to share their time, their skill, and their joy. Forty-five people enjoyed it, along with our church staff, and there was even some left over for the next day.

When People Give, Blessing Flows
Seen side by side, these four moments tell one story. A repaired heater, a rebuilt fireplace, a beautifully laid tea, a homemade cake. None of them happened on their own. Each one happened because someone chose to give.

And that is the quiet pattern I get to watch from where I stand; when people give, blessing flows. God is glorified, our church family grows stronger, and we find ourselves wanting to be together all the more.

If you have ever wondered whether your time, your skills, or simply your willingness could make a difference here, they can, and they do. There is a place for you in the life of SDBC.
