Summer is on the horizon, and we are excited for what that means for youth ministry at SDBC. We wanted to share two exciting initiatives happening this summer and how you can be involved in helping young people experience the love of Jesus.
First: Gap Unplugged
This summer, we are reviving Gap Unplugged, our midweek evening youth program that runs throughout the summer months.
Gap Unplugged will bring together students entering grades 5-12 for a weekly gathering that alternates between events at the church and activities in the community. The goal is to strip away some of the more polished and structured elements of our school-year programming and create natural opportunities for students and leaders to build meaningful relationships.
Each evening will also include a chance for students to hear the gospel through a testimony, bible story, or short video. For many of these events, we'll be partnering with the youth groups of Ladner Baptist Church and Tsawwassen Alliance Church, creating opportunities for students to experience the unity Jesus calls his Church to and to build friendships with other believers in our community.
Because summer is often filled with vacations, camps, and changing schedules, Gap Unplugged will provide a consistent connection point whenever students are in town. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue investing in the lives of students throughout the summer months.
How can you be involved?
- Pray that students would encounter Jesus and grow in their faith this summer.
- Invite the preteens and teens in your life to come and join the fun.
Second: Friday Fanfares
This summer also marks the return of Friday Fanfares. We launched this initiative last summer to show radical hospitality to returning Camp Qwanoes campers and their families by offering refreshments, fun, and a warm SDBC welcome as they arrived home.
The response was incredible. Families and Camp Qwanoes staff shared how meaningful the experience was, transforming something as routine as picking up luggage into an opportunity to encounter the generous love of Jesus in a tangible way.
Our hope is that these simple acts of hospitality will continue to help families—especially those without a church background—take one step closer to Jesus as they see his love reflected through his people.
How can you be involved?
To make Friday Fanfares possible, we need people willing to serve in one of two simple ways:
1. Join the hospitality team
- Serve on a Friday evening in the church courtyard from 5:15-6:15 PM
- welcome campers and families and help serve refreshments
2. Bake cookies or other homemade treats
- Any amount you can contribute is appreciated, as we give away more than five dozen treats each week
- You're welcome to bake ahead of time, and we can freeze the extras.
Friday Fanfare Dates:
- July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
- August 7, 14, 21, 28
- September 5 (Saturday)
Our goal is to have at least three hospitality volunteers and two baking volunteers every week. So whether you're a family with preteens or teens, or simply someone willing to offer an hour of your time or a batch of cookies, this summer is full of opportunities to participate in how God is loving people to life.
We hope that you'll join us in praying, inviting, and serving as we seek to create spaces where young people and families can experience the love of Jesus in practical and meaningful ways.
