Dear Church Family,
The Global Missions Team (GMT), along with the Advocates for our missionaries, are starting the process of introducing you to the missionary families that you support here at SDBC. We will have a regular feature in the SDBC e-newsletter to acquaint you with the work that you have faithfully put your trust in. Currently, SDBC supports fourteen missionary families in the field who serve throughout the world.
The GMT is motivated by Romans 10:14-15:
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!
This month, we want to introduce you to the Hwang family: Jacob, Rachel, and their six children: Yohan, Joy, Joseph, Abigail, Joshua, and Rahab. That's correct. There are eight of them living on Flores Island on the west coast of Vancouver Island, serving the Ahousaht First Nations people. The Hwangs are fully integrated into this community, sharing life with these people, and they are a vital part of the community.
The Hwangs are committed to youth leadership development, and accomplish this through their church on the island (approximately 70 regular attendees) and different youth activities with other island churches in Port Alberni, Nanaimo, and Victoria.
The Hwangs are an extraordinary, sacrificial family committed to sharing the gospel among the First Nations. An example of this would be their trip off island every two weeks, weather permitting, which includes a water taxi for one hour and a six-hour trip to Nanaimo for grocery shopping at Costco. Also imagine having six kids and the lack of access to medical care. Their guiding mission statement is, "Raising Indigenous leaders to grow a sustainable community of believers through multiplying disciple makers."
