Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Vancouver Urban Ministries (VUM) Fundraiser event. VUM is affiliated with our Fellowship Pacific Baptist churches and their mission is to serve students and families in East Vancouver. They do this through offering free one-on-one tutoring in the Orton-Gillingham Method to students and families that could not otherwise afford it.
If this sounds familiar, it's because it is! Our SDBC Tutoring program is modelled after the VUM tutoring model. We got to know VUM in 2019 as we were raising funds to start our own tutoring program. They have been instrumental in helping, equipping, and encouraging us, as well as training our volunteer tutors in the Orton-Gillingham Method.
At their event they reported that they are tutoring 65 students weekly and creating wonderful relationships with the families and school in their area. As we continue to grow and learn with our SDBC Tutoring program we are so thankful to have organizations like VUM who are willing to partner with us and help us live out our mission. We are partnering together and loving our communities.
SDBC Tutoring will be kicking off at the beginning of October. We will have three returning students and we hope to add many new students this fall. Please be in prayer for SDBC Tutoring and all of the students and tutors who will begin this term. Also, we are continuing our own fundraising for this ministry.
