On behalf of the Elder's Board at SDBC, I would like to thank everyone who was able to participate in our 2022 Annual Business Meeting last week. We hope that you found the evening to be informative and encouraging.
The approval of the 2023 budget is an indication that we, as a church family, are united in using our financial resources to further God's work in our community. We are thankful for our staff who have continued to use wisdom regarding the use of church finances. We are also grateful for everyone who calls SDBC home and has given faithfully throughout the year. This has enabled us to continue to serve our community in a variety of ways. Support from other partners in the community has also been a great encouragement. We continue to seek and follow where God is leading us, trusting that he will continue to provide all that is necessary to accomplish his plan.
This past Sunday was the first Sunday of Advent where we focused on Hope. One of the verses that was shared was from 1 Peter 3:15: "but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect..." In an earlier chapter, 1 Peter 2:21 says, "who through him (Jesus) are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God."
As we enter this Christmas season, it may feel a little difficult to maintain hope. We are all facing challenges of all kinds. For some, it's our physical or mental health, and for others it is broken or strained relationships, financial stress, or lack of direction for the future. The Advent candle of Hope is intended to help us remember that our hope is in Jesus, regardless of the circumstances around us. Having hope in Jesus and in the plans that he has for us allows us to experience peace and joy in our lives today. In a world that is desperately seeking peace and joy, I pray that God would give all of us many opportunities to share the hope that is in us, with gentleness and respect.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
(Romans 15:13)
