ELL Class Launch

20Aug, 2024

We are getting ready for the ELL fall semester after a two-month summer break. The ELL classes have become an essential platform for overcoming the language and cultural barriers faced by immigrants joining our community. Moreover, they have become a place where we can express the service and love of Jesus Christ. Through offering ELL classes to immigrants, we hope to become a channel to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The classes will begin on September 3rd and will be held every Tuesday from 10AM to 11:30AM in Room 201. This fall semester, we are especially excited to welcome a new teacher, Janet Fondse, who will be leading the class. I asked Janet to write an introduction to herself for our church members, and I'm sharing her introduction with you:

"My husband and I arrived in Tsawwassen from Waterloo, Ontario last year. Having retired from a career in music education, the time seemed right to pursue my interest in teaching English as a second language. As you know, newcomers to Canada face many challenges as they learn how to integrate into Canadian life. Now, more than ever before, local churches have a wonderful opportunity to join other agencies in addressing this need. I am pleased to be able to partner with SDBC to welcome immigrants and temporary visitors to the area and to build a community of friendship and support through English language classes. I desire that Christ be made known in how we receive those he brings into our midst. Indeed, one of the marks of Christ-followers is that they invite strangers in and care for their needs (Matt. 25:35). In the ELL class we will do this with humility, generosity, warmth, and respect. We will seek to build relationships and share our faith as the Holy Spirit leads. As SDBC continues to open its doors to newcomers, my prayer is that they will be richly blessed in practical, emotional, and spiritual ways."

If you want to learn English, please feel free to join our class on Tuesdays. If you know anyone who might benefit from this class, please let them know about our ELL class. For more information, email Grace Kim, our Director of Korean Ministry.

Grace loves the church--the body of Jesus Christ. She loves experiencing God's love through the church in our daily lives as we share life in the context of community. Her greatest joy in ministry is seeing the faith grow in communities that are centred around God's word. She is especially passionate about serving the Korean-speaking people of our community and helping them to grow in Christ. Outside of ministry, she enjoys spending time with her awesome husband, Leesoo, and their children: Olivia, David, and Elly.
