Passage: Luke
For the second message of our Advent series, we look at the journey of the shepherds in Luke 2. This vivid scene is full of powerful imagery and emotion. It begins quietly in the darkness with shepherds watching over their flocks until, suddenly, an incredible announcement of life-changing peace breaks in with awe and wonder.
God shines light into the darkness. A glorious heavenly chorus appears. And an incredible declaration is made: “peace among those with whom he is pleased!” This is good news that changes everything. It is history-changing, life-altering, eternity-impacting good news of great joy. The Messiah, the Saviour, has been born.
And who does God choose to receive this announcement of a Saviour who brings peace? Simple, ordinary, everyday shepherds. Not the elites. Not the powerful. Lowly shepherds. How do they respond? Filled with joy and hope, they go with haste to Bethlehem. They recognize that the peace they have longed for, the peace they couldn’t find on their own, had finally arrived. A true, lasting, eternal peace, available to them. Available to all people. Available to you and me.
How will you respond to this good news of great joy?
