Reach Mentorship

17Jan, 2018

As the new young adult's ministry, Reach, was being developed last summer, it became apparent that there was a need for mentorship within the ministry. Mentorship is incredibly important at every stage in life, both mentoring those younger than you and being mentored by those that are older and further on in their lives. We see this principle represented in the bible. Paul was a mentor to Timothy, and as a result, Timothy was more supported and equipped to pour into and mentor those younger than him.

So how does the Reach mentorship ministry actually work? Once a young adult expresses interest in the program, we set out to match them with a mentor. We do so by looking for similar interests and passions, and for someone of the same gender who has already been through the stage of life that the young adult is currently in. After a mentorship match is made, the selected mentor reaches out to the young adult and they begin meeting once a month. Once a month is the only commitment that needs to be made, from there on, it is up to each mentorship pair to decide what works best for them.

Once these pairs are created, the young adults are encouraged to take further steps by praying and seeking out a youth aged student to begin walking beside, pouring into, and mentoring. The purpose of this ministry was not exclusively about pouring into the young adults. It was also about providing the young adults with a way to mentor those around them who are younger, as well as those who may be hurting and in need of their own mentorship.

I, personally, have been blessed by this ministry, and every month I have the beautiful opportunity of meeting with my mentor and also meeting with the students that I mentor. These relationships have helped me to grow in my faith, express my beliefs in new ways, dig deeper into what I believe and what it means to live life as a Christian, and also experience more fully what it means to love like Jesus. Walking through life with other believers is a gift from God; being supported by my mentor furthers enables me to be able to support those I mentor. Mentorship inspires me, and I am so excited to see how God uses this ministry both inside and outside the walls of our church.

Please pray as we continue to develop and grow this ministry!
