Merry Christmas!

19Dec, 2019

Christmas is an annual reminder of God's faithfulness. As the angel Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus to Mary in Luke 1:31-33, he said, "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."

This statement wasn't vague at all; Gabriel couldn't be more explicit in saying that the Messiah (or the Christ) was coming. The promised Messiah that all the Jewish people were desperately waiting for was to sit on David's throne forever. The angel told Mary that this child whose name is to be Jesus (deriving from the Hebrew name Joshua meaning, "to save") was going to save this world from sin and rule righteously over his kingdom forever.

This is the hope of Christmas—that we can be confident in our faithful God who keeps his promises. The promises God made with Abraham, Moses, and David were perfectly fulfilled in Jesus. The coming of this Messiah King was the fulfillment of all Old Testament promises and prophecies, and Jesus is the evidence for us to believe that God will keep all of his promises he made to us: his promise to put an end to injustice one day; his promise to usher in his perfect rule and reign; his promise to wipe away our tears; and his promise to never abandon us and to be with us always until the end of the age.

No matter how you're celebrating Christmas this year, I encourage you to take a moment to remember this hope of Christmas. May this hope bring you unwavering joy and irrepressible peace. May it give you confidence to trust in God our Saviour. May it cause you to praise our King and worship him. This year, our staff is thankful for God's faithfulness in our lives, and we're so grateful to serve our great God alongside you. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and we look forward to celebrating God's faithfulness in 2020 as well!
