God Is at Work at Summer Camps

07Aug, 2025

Every week we have these blogs in our newsletter reflecting about how God is moving among, around, and even through us. They capture a little of Jesus' ongoing story of his creation and world. Hopefully we as a church might find some encouragement hearing the various ways the gospel is transforming lives today.

I want to briefly highlight an area of ministry that, rather than slowing down and taking a break in the summer, actually goes in the other direction. During July and August Christian summer camps are ramping up, heating up, and taking off. It is an incredible thing when kids hear the truth about Jesus while taking in a week at camp. Yes, they love camp for the amazing activities. Of course they love camp for the friendships and good vibes and wonderful community. But the hope and goal of camps like Qwanoes, Sunnybrae, Anvil, Keats, Pioneer Pacific, and others, is to show kids and youth the amazing love of Jesus and the power of his gospel. Prayers are prayed all year leading up to camp, and I can tell you without a doubt, God most definitely answers those prayers. He continues to open hearts and transform lives through this vital ministry. Personally, some of the most special times where I witnessed God move have been at summer camp. Some of my most profound personal spiritual growth times have happened while attending and serving at camp.

Right now, as I type this, everyone in my family (all but poor old me!) is at camp. I have one child as a camper and my wife and other three kids are serving on staff at a couple different camps. We have MANY others in our church who have been, who are, and who will be volunteering as camp staff this summer. We have many in our church and our community who will be campers. Most of our SDBC staff are currently at a special ministry workers camp this week! Christian summer camp is a special place. It is an amazing opportunity to join God in what he is doing and help plant the seeds of the gospel in the hearts of children and youth.

So, other than hear about God's story through camp ministry, perhaps you'll join me, even right now as you read, and do this one thing: pray. Pray for the hundreds of students who will hear the good news at camp. Pray for the staff who are following Jesus in his call to make disciples. And pray that this fantastic ministry will continue to be a bright light in this world.

Thanks church family!
