Catching up With Staff: Dave

19Nov, 2020

It is week two of our interviews with the SDBC staff! This week we hear from Dave Dodds. In his time here at SDBC he has taught the staff about astronomy, how to tie knots, and how to tell amazing "dad jokes." We are thankful for Dave!

What is your role at SDBC and how long have you worked here?
I am the Director of Facility Maintenance/Lead Custodian at SDBC, and have been (on and off) for over 20 years – from 1979-1981 (while at university), 1988-2003, and 2017 to the present. My job is to oversee the custodial staff in our attempts to keep the facility clean, tidy, and functioning for ministry and rentals.

What is something about you that people in the church might be surprised to discover?
People might be surprised to know I have a B.Ed. with a major in Industrial Education, a minor in Philosophy, and also a diploma in gunsmithing.

What are some of the things you love most about being part of the SDBC community/family?
I think the thing I like most about being part of the SDBC family is the people. I've been here long enough (60+ years) that I have been privileged to see God working through four generations of individual families in the church. It is both exciting and humbling to watch God's faithfulness from generation to generation.

How has your role shifted and changed since the start of COVID-19?
The COVID-19 pandemic really changed workplace dynamics here, especially in the spring and summer. With the church office closed, I was often the only one working on site, which at times was nice, but sometimes lonely, too. Also, I've never before handled so much mail and so many packages!

What are some of the challenges and triumphs you have encountered in your life and work since the beginning of COVID 19?
There has been a bit of a silver lining to the COVID slowdown, as we've had an opportunity to catch up on maintenance projects that there just wasn't time for during our normal, busy schedule. Many thanks to the volunteers who have helped out with the "3 Ps" of painting, polishing, and pressure washing.

How can we pray for you in this season of life?
Please pray for God's protection for me and the custodial staff. This job requires climbing ladders, working on rooftops, etc., and working alone adds to the risk. Please pray for our safety.
