Loving Like Jesus Through Helping Others

17Mar, 2017

When asked to write up a God story for the newsletter this week, I couldn’t really come up with one earth shattering story to share. We have been privileged to have God put us in the lives of such an eclectic group of people: single parent families, those with disabilities, couples, widows, and seniors, among others. We know that the people we help are very appreciative, but only God knows what impact this may have on His kingdom. There have been sore muscles and much laughter, as well as tears when we pray a blessing on someone’s new surroundings. One thing that is clear is that God is faithful and He provides. This is definitely not clear to us when we first take on a request. It is amazing how God provides. We have seen His hand at work in providing the vehicles and trailers when needed, but more importantly, the individuals willing to give their time to show God’s love, and to love like Jesus. Sometimes, as the time approaches a "helps" job, we don’t have the bodies we need, but then schedules change or all of a sudden others show up, others outside of our influence take care of the situation. I think that is the "wow" moment on how God provides.

This help doesn’t always come from our team. Recently, we moved a mom and her children from Ladner to Tsawwassen. Although we had the resources to complete the move, we only had a few old guys to move all the furniture and on top of this, it was a townhouse with many, many, stairs.  Our team is getting a little long in the tooth, so going up and down flights of stairs is not always the easiest for us. The mom we were helping enlisted two amazing teenagers that lived next door to her, who were incredible. Everyone on our team was blown away with their enthusiasm to help and the energy they had to do so. Once again, God had provided and put us in the life of the family we helped, as well as these two teenagers. One of these boys was very interested in woodworking, so our team was able to help him out with some tools to pursue his interest.

Our team has been at this for many years, and the irony is that we are all getting older, but God has blessed us with health and resources to spread God’s love. We have met wonderful people.  He has strengthened our reliance on Him and the faith of those believers we have helped. I am confident we have had an impact on nonbelievers in our community that only God knows. It has been a joy to work with others to show how to love like Jesus.
