First Steps Registration 2020

main image

Keep steady your steps according to God's promise...Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.
- Psalm 119:133a & Proverbs 4:26

First Steps Preschool has been a ministry of South Delta Baptist Church since 1999. For 21 years we have consistently provided a "safe, loving, and fun" preschool for the children in our church and community. Everywhere I seem to go, I end up meeting someone who has either sent their child or grandchild to First Steps or has heard about the great program we offer. This is my fourth school year directing and teaching at First Steps, and I am constantly blown away by how God is using this ministry to impact our community and church family.

A few weeks ago, I was searching for some books at a store in Ladner when a friendly woman started chatting with me. After casually conversing back and forth, she eventually asked if I was a teacher. This led to me sharing about my position at First Steps Preschool. I noticed she was a bit surprised by my answer. After she collected herself, I asked her if she was familiar with the preschool. The woman proceeded to tell me how both her children, now adults, had attended First Steps when it first opened. She shared quite openly about how she was supported by the teachers during a very difficult time in her life, and, because of how she was loved and supported by them, she was able to overcome her challenges. This woman unknowingly filled me with encouragement and hope. God knew I needed to meet this stranger and listen to her testimony about the experience she had with First Steps.

Even though it's just the beginning of February, we are already busy planning for September. We just launched our new online preschool registration system which will allow families to register in a simple and more efficient manner. No more lining up or sleeping over at the church! Registration is now open for returning families until February 15th. New families may register via our website starting Saturday, February 22nd @ 9:30AM.

If you have a child born in 2016 or 2017, and would like information about our 3-year-old or 4-year-old program, please click here to visit our website.

We also have exciting opportunities for employment at First Steps Preschool. If you would like further information about joining our teaching team or have questions regarding employment requirements, email Katie Yakiwchuk, Director of First Steps Preschool, or visit our website.

Where Did the Time Go?

main image

Where did the time go? Time is just flying by! How did we get to this stage in our lives?

Are these phrases you hear yourself saying often?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 teaches, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." The interesting thing about time is whatever stage of life you are currently in, you are constantly either looking back on a memory of a time past or looking forward to a goal not yet accomplished.

Your preschool years may have been completed decades ago and have no relevance to your present season of life. Some of you reading this may have just graduated high school and may not have a single memory of your preschool years (even though they were only 15 years ago!). Others might be in the midst of parenting the most challenging and difficult 3-year-old that ever walked the planet and you just want this season to end.

You were once a preschooler. Allow yourself to sit and ponder that for a moment. Yes, there was a time in your life that you didn't know your colours or ABCs. You didn't know how to use scissors, zip up your coat, or stand in a line. You had to be taught how to share, wait your turn, and how to apologize and make it right with someone. These skills are taught at young age and then developed over the course of your life. You don't become a successful adult by accident. We require different people in our lives, in different seasons, to help mentor, teach, and encourage our growth and development.

Many of us are wrapping up our school year either as a student, teacher, or parent. If you personally don't fall into any of these categories, allow yourself to reflect on the memories you have from the different seasons of your life. Pray for those who helped bring you to your current season of life. Ecclesiastes 3:2 goes on to say, "a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted." Sometimes you are the seed being planted, other times you are harvesting the reward of your efforts. In other seasons, you are the farmer who is planting the seeds. Each of these seasons comes with its own rewards, challenges, and experiences. A wise woman once told me, "Don't will away any stage of life. Earnestly try to stay present in each season and reflect on the lessons learned and blessings that surround you daily."

As First Steps Preschool completes another school year, I am filled with many different emotions. Personally, a season is ending for our family. All of our children will be attending elementary school in September. We sang "good-bye until next time" to our preschool season. God has brought us through yet another season of life.

Whatever season of life you are in, I pray that you will find a lesson learned, reflect on blessings of provision, and know the love of our Saviour.

Safe, Loving, Fun

main image

The mission of First Steps Preschool is Safe, Loving, Fun. These words may seem simple, but they are packed with purpose.

Safe: safe is defined as being without injury, risk, or danger. Yes, that is exactly what we provide to our utmost abilities for all our children, however, to feel safe is to also know that you are emotionally secure. A child needs to feel both physically safe and emotionally safe so they can learn to their potential.

Loving: children have an amazing ability to sense love. True, genuine, unconditional, and purposeful love. Every morning before welcoming the children into our classroom, our teachers pray that we will love each child to our utmost ability. To love them exactly as they are fearfully and wonderfully created to be.

Fun: who doesn't want to have fun? Preschoolers know how to have fun, and how to sing and dance without inhibitions. They know how to be constantly in awe of God's amazing creations as they discover the big and small wonders of the world. Joy for a child can be reaching the last monkey bar, completing a puzzle on their own, or playing in a pile of crunchy fall leaves! Experiences like these are the foundations to successful future learning. Don't underestimate the importance of early childhood education. It has tremendous value and impact on young lives.

During the month of February, First Steps Preschool will be holding registration for classes that start in September 2019. Returning families can register between February 1st and 15th. Registration for new families will take place on Saturday, February 23rd at 9:30AM in the First Steps classroom (room 106). For information regarding our program, fees, or schedule, visit our website or email First Steps.
